Artistic expression, particularly in the form of boudoir photography, often sparks debates and controversies. Although I’m an advocate for press freedom, I believe social media and media platforms should not be a free-for-all space. However, this raises two complex questions: how do we determine what content should be discouraged, and how do we ensure fair treatment of all lawful forms of expression?
Boudoir photographers like myself face censorship on social media due to nudity and partial nudity, which violates often unclear community guidelines. Some platforms may view boudoir photographs as sexual content or objectification of women, also against their guidelines. This censorship limits artists’ ability to showcase their work and reach their audience.
The presence of double standards and biases is also a significant concern. We often see instances where freedom of speech is censored when it doesn’t fit the platform’s narrative or financial interest. This inconsistency undermines social media platforms’ credibility and raises questions about their commitment to press freedom.
I think it goes without saying that content promoting criminal activity should be discouraged or removed. However, it’s also clear that more can be done to ensure fair treatment of lawful forms of expression. Social media platforms can:
- Work with creators to establish clear guidelines for artistic expression and prevent misinterpretation
- Create, and in other instances, do more to enforce age restrictions for mature content
- Give users more control over the content they prefer to see
By working together, social media and media platforms can uphold freedom of expression while maintaining a safe and respectful online community.
