Amanda Gril: Blending Artistic Vision and Empowerment in Boudoir Photography

Amanda's creative inspiration stems from a variety of art forms, and she emphasizes the importance of imagination in her work, using Nikon cameras as her tool of choice. Reflecting on her career, she finds joy in the transformative experience of her clients, advocating for boudoir photography as a journey of self-discovery and empowerment for women, while also balancing the organizational challenges of her profession. Beyond photography, Amanda is passionate about sensory theater, and she advises aspiring boudoir photographers to focus on understanding light and connecting with clients to bring out their best.

Let's delve into our conversation with Amanda:

01) What does boudoir photography mean to you?

I think of the boudoir as a starting point where I can put a woman on a pedestal and portray her, through her physical presence, attitude and charisma, as a strong, animated and vigorous emotional force. All of which she expresses through her femininity, sexual energy, and inner and outer beauty.

Because beyond the final, compelling images, the greater goal of such a session is to bring out, in every woman, her own sense of empowerment and awareness of just what a unique, wonderful, erotic, and self-confident woman she is. She accepts life's scars, wears them with pride, because they’ve taught her that only by navigating life’s challenges can she really reach the stars that belong to her.

02) Why did you choose to pursue a career as a boudoir / fine art photographer? What got you started in boudoir?

Initially, my journey began in portrait and wedding photography. The concept of boudoir photography emerged later in response to increasing client requests for more sensual images. Its full potential unfolded when I returned to Slovenia, and since then, it has become my favorite and most cherished aspect of photography.

03) What kind of creative process is there behind boudoir photography?

First, getting to know my client is essential for me. The more I know about her the more successful outcome will be. By knowing I mean understanding the client’s unique story, background, and reason for booking a boudoir shoot. This connection builds trust and creates a safe space for the client to freely share her concerns, ask questions, and talk about any insecurities she might have. After we agree on a theme, style, and vision for the photo shoot.

04) How do you communicate with a client or model you’ve just met to make them comfortable for boudoir / nude photography?

Establishing trust is at the core of my approach. I dedicate time to understanding my clients, fostering open communication, and providing clear guidance as a photographer. I create a relaxed atmosphere and uplift them in every possible way.

Through positive encouragement, I aim to ensure that they feel at ease, allowing their true selves to shine.

It's intriguing that even the composed ladies who seem to radiate confidence, enthusiastically adopt my advice for striking poses, showing more refined attitude, and revealing their authentic selves — all while wearing a dazzling smile. I mean, who wouldn't want to take the spotlight and look absolutely fabulous? :)

05) How do you educate yourself to take better photos?

I'm always diving into photography masterclasses, soaking up knowledge on topics that catch my interest. Being the curious soul that I am, I find inspiration not only in photography but also in other art forms. Whether it's wandering through museums, checking out exhibitions, grooving at concerts, or anything that sparks my imagination – always keenly observing the vibrant life around me.

06) How would you describe your photography style?

I consider my boudoir style to be cinematic. While colors, composition, angles, and the overall ambiance are essential, I aim to craft a mood and atmosphere that tells a story through sensuality and vulnerability. Moreover, I consciously steer clear of cliches, particularly avoiding common posing stereotypes.

07) What type of cameras do you shoot with, boudoir and/vs other?

I don't use any specific camera to shoot boudoir photography. Concerning cameras in general, I am a Nikon person ;)

08) What kind of other gear do you use for boudoir and/vs other?

My imagination is the most powerful gear!

09) Among your works, which one is your favorite? Why?

I have numerous favorite photos, and choosing just one is a challenge. Each of them signifies a moment in time that holds special meaning for me.

However, if I had to decide, I'd likely lean towards my early work because of the sentimental value it holds. Speaking of being a hopeless romantic... ;)

10) What is the most difficult part of being a boudoir photographer for you?

I like all aspects of boudoir photography itself. But if I have to pick something it would be juggling organizational activities.

11) What is the most rewarding part of being a boudoir photographer for you?

A boudoir photo shoot with me isn't just about capturing images; it's an entire experience, a form of visual therapy. Wondering why?

I place the woman on a pedestal. It's not solely about her physical appearance; I strive to capture her true essence – her femininity, her power, everything she's comfortable sharing, and sometimes, even aspects she hasn't fully realized. I frequently witness the positive impact this boudoir journey has on her.

I'm beyond grateful to play a role in helping her discover these layers of herself. So, I would say the most fulfilling aspect of being a boudoir photographer is witnessing my client not just embracing but thriving in the newfound facets of her identity.

12) Just for fun, if you could shoot in any location, what would it be?

Oh, any royal residence would do! ;) For example Palace of Versailles. I love its immense, luxurious and extravagant halls, ornately painted ceilings, glass chandeliers, gilded statues... Do you have a manager's contact number by any chance? ;)

13) Do you have any other profession or anything you are passionate about?

Photography is my primary love and passion, with the world of sensory theater coming in as a close second. Combining these two realms feels like pure magic to me.

14) What would you recommend to photographers who would like to start boudoir photography?

Take that first step! Following that, in my view, two things are essential: understanding and working with light, and developing the ability to connect with your client by truly seeing them, ultimately delivering your very best.

15) Do you have a special message for women, particularly those contemplating a boudoir session?

I think it's essential for every woman to try boudoir photography and embrace her feminine side. My message is simple: I encourage every woman to confront her fears, step beyond her comfort zone, and discover the hidden treasures waiting for her on the other side.
